Your garden is not in the same climate as the harbour
Sydney's weather report is taken beside the water. Your garden isn't. On a hot summer day the western suburbs routinely run five to ten degrees above the coast, because the sea breeze that saves the east often arrives late out here — or never turns up at all. Every real decision in a Western Sydney garden follows from that one fact.

Plant for the west, not for the brochure
The nursery labels are written for Sydney generally. Out here the things that shrug off a run of 40° days are bottlebrush, grevillea, westringia, lomandra, dianella, crepe myrtle and the local Cumberland Plain natives — forest red gum and grey box. They'll still be standing in March when the imported feature plant isn't.

New estate, turf laid last year
The problem is under the turf, not on it
New-estate lawns are usually turf rolled onto a thin skin of imported topsoil over compacted builder's clay. It looks perfect for a year, then thins out and burns off every summer, because the roots hit a pan they can't get through. The fix is aeration, gypsum and organic matter worked in over a couple of seasons — not more water and not more fertiliser.

The February problem
Why the lawn gives up right when you need it
Nine times out of ten a Western Sydney lawn doesn't die of heat — it dies of shallow roots. A short daily sprinkle wets the top centimetre, so that's where the roots stay, and the first run of 40° days cooks them. Water less often and much deeper and the same lawn grows itself a set of roots that can ride the summer out.

Hoses and irrigation systems are for before 10am and after 4pm, and they need a trigger nozzle or a timer — which happens to be exactly when a deep soak does the most good anyway. Watering the lawn at 1pm in Penrith mostly waters the sky.

Scale, handled properly
A quarter-acre lawn is not a small lawn done four times. It needs the right machine, a mowing pattern that doesn't scalp the high spots, and a schedule that keeps up with the growth surge from September to March. We bring the gear for the block rather than making the block suit the gear — including ride-on mowing and acreage work where it's warranted.
Soil that varies street by street
Western Sydney sits largely on shale-derived clay — heavy, fertile when it's managed, and unforgiving when it isn't. It waterlogs in July and sets like concrete in January. Closer to the river there are sandier pockets that do the opposite and drain too fast. We treat the soil we actually find: gypsum and organic matter and aeration on the clay, mulch and moisture-holding compost on the sand.
Out here you're not gardening against the weather twice a year. You're gardening against it from November to March — so the garden has to be built for it.
Commercial sites, not just backyards
Business parks, factory frontages, childcare centres, strata blocks and retail car parks make up a big share of the greenery in the region, and they have their own rules: fixed schedules, site inductions, presentation that reflects the business, and invoicing that suits the property manager. What can I actually grow that survives a Penrith summer?
Plenty — as long as it's chosen for the west rather than for a coastal courtyard. The trick is getting them through their first two summers with deep watering and mulch; after that they largely look after themselves.
My soil is solid clay — can it actually be fixed?
Improved, yes; replaced, no. The program is gypsum to break the clay's structure, organic matter and compost dug or mulched in, aeration to open it up, and mulch on top so it stops setting hard between waterings. It's a two to three season job rather than a weekend, but Western Sydney clay is genuinely fertile once it drains — it's usually the best soil in the city to garden on after it's been worked.
How often should a big Western Sydney lawn be mown?
Weekly to fortnightly from September through March, and every three to four weeks over winter. Growth out here is faster and more sudden than on the coast, so the gap that works in June will leave you with hay in October. We set the schedule to the season rather than a flat year-round frequency, and we raise the cutting height through summer so the lawn shades its own roots.
