Stump Grinding Services Sydney

Grinding shreds the stump into chips down to a set depth below the surface and leaves the root system in the ground to decay over the following years. Removal means excavating the stump and the main root plate out entirely, which needs machine access, leaves a large hole to backfill, and costs considerably more. For turf, garden beds, paths and general tidying, grinding is the right answer. For anything structural going on that spot, removal is.

As deep as the space needs, which is usually 150 to 300 mm below the surface. Roughly: 100 to 150 mm if you just want it gone and below mower height, about 200 mm to turf over, about 300 mm for a garden bed, and 500 to 600 mm plus chasing the main roots if you want to replant. Note those are depths below the finished ground level, not below the top of the stump — a stump standing 300 mm proud has to be taken to ground level before the useful depth even starts.

It is quoted rather than published, because seven things move the number: the diameter measured across the cut, the species and how hard it is, the depth you actually need, the access for a machine, the ground conditions and what is around it, whether services are in play, and whether the chips leave with us. A single small stump in open ground is a short visit; a large hardwood behind a narrow gate near a pool line is a different job. Most single domestic stumps are half an hour to two hours on site, plus set-up, clean-up and getting the machine in and out. Diameter and hardness drive it: a 200 mm pine stump is quick, a 600 mm ironbark is not. Several stumps in one visit are much more efficient than several visits, which is why we always ask whether there are others.

Generally no. Removing or pruning a living tree is what councils regulate, and rules vary between them; grinding a stump from a tree that has already come down is usually not tree work in that sense. There are exceptions worth checking — heritage conservation areas, significant tree registers, and conditions attached to a consent that the tree was removed under. Your call, and it should be decided at the quote. They can be raked back into the hole, which is free and fine if you just want the stump gone; spread elsewhere in the garden as mulch, where they are genuinely useful on top of beds; or loaded out and taken away, which costs more and leaves the area immediately usable. The volume surprises everybody, because chips fluff up as they are cut and the mound ends up looking bigger than the stump did.

Not straight away, and ideally not in exactly the same spot. Two things are in the way. The remaining root plate is still there, so a new root system has to compete with a mass of decaying timber. And fresh chips tie up nitrogen as they break down, so anything planted into them yellows and stalls. If you must plant in the same position, grind deep, get the chips out, backfill with soil and compost, and give it a season. If you can shift the new tree a metre or two, do that instead — it is the better plant every time.

The remaining roots stop growing and slowly decay for most species, which is exactly what you want. A handful of species are different: camphor laurel, privet, poplar, willow, robinia and some figs can push suckers up from live roots for a while afterwards. Grinding the stump does not kill those roots, so expect follow-up on those, and on a persistent one full removal is the cleaner answer.

That is the normal case in Sydney, and it is why narrow-access machines exist. A standard pedestrian gate is around 0.9 m, a wide side gate 1.2 m and a double gate 1.8 m — our narrow-access grinders get through the first of those. Where even that will not fit, the options are lifting a fence panel, coming through the house or garage on boards, or in rare cases craning a machine over. This is the serious risk in stump work, because grinding depth and service depth are the same range. Where we cannot be certain what is under a stump, we limit the depth or hand-dig, and we tell you rather than finding out with a spinning wheel. The limit is not the stump, it is what the machine can safely reach and what is behind the obstacle — a pool shell, a neighbour's wall, or a retaining wall with drainage behind it. Where the wheel cannot get in far enough we will grind what we can reach and tell you honestly what is left, rather than pretending a machine can do something it cannot.
