Why we are the best at commercial gardening
Commercial grounds are a different job to a back yard, and it is not really about skill — it is about scale, reliability and paperwork. A site has to look the same every week whether it rained or not. It has to be safe while the public, staff, residents or children are walking through it. Somebody has to take responsibility if a branch comes down. And the invoice has to make sense to a property manager who never sets foot on the site.
Sydney Gardeners has been running for over twenty years, family operated, with eight-plus utes on the road and one training standard across all of them. We work right across Sydney — the Northern Beaches, the CBD, the inner suburbs, the Eastern Suburbs and the upper and lower North Shore — and commercial sites have been part of that from the start. That means when a crew is unavailable, another one covers it, which is the single thing most small operators cannot promise.
One contractor instead of four
Most commercial sites end up with a mowing contractor, a hedging contractor, a tree company and somebody for the gutters, all invoicing separately and all blaming each other for the bit nobody did. We do the lot, on one schedule and one invoice, which removes the coordination work from your desk entirely.

What is included in commercial gardening
Commercial gardening covers a wide range of work, and maintaining a property properly needs most of it at some point in the year. We do all of it in house as a one-stop shop rather than subcontracting the awkward parts out.

Ride on mowing
Every site needs a tailored service. Council contracts and large commercial properties are ride-on work, and it is well within our scope. Counter-intuitively it is often cheaper than push mowing the same area, because it is done in a fraction of the time — on anything over about half an acre it is almost always the right call.

Tree trimming and removal
A complete tree service. Anything from a light trim to keep growth off a building facade through to a full removal, done by qualified people. All green waste goes with us, and stumps come out where they need to. Council approvals are sorted before we start, not after.

Hedge trimming
Any size, including the tall ones. Commercial hedges are frequently well past ladder height, so the team carries scaffolding and the right equipment for the job rather than improvising. Long boundary runs are kept dense and square rather than hacked back once a year.

Mulching
The cheapest weed control there is. On a commercial property weeds get away fast and make the whole site read as neglected. Beds mulched thickly stop that before it starts. On larger contracts we lay weed mat underneath as a second barrier, which makes the effect last far longer and cuts how often the beds need attention.

Pressure washing and gutter clearing
Presentation and risk, together. Paths, entries and car parks washed down so the frontage looks maintained, and gutters cleared before the storm season rather than after the ceiling stains. Both are the sort of job that gets deferred until it becomes expensive.

Scheduled, not reactive. Turf and garden bed weed control on a programme so it never reaches the stage anyone notices, with the right products applied by people qualified to apply them, and timed around when the site is occupied.

What a commercial job costs varies enormously with the difficulty, the size and how long it takes, so nobody can honestly publish a single rate. What we can be straight about is the three ways this work gets priced and which one suits which site.

What actually moves a commercial quote
Area matters less than most people expect. What moves the number is access — whether gear can be driven on or has to be carried — along with how much green waste comes off the site, how much of the work is at height, whether it has to happen outside business hours, and how far the site has drifted since it was last maintained. A site on a schedule costs less per visit than the same site rescued three times a year.

Due diligence
Eight things to ask any commercial gardening contractor
Commercial work carries obligations a residential job does not, and the gap between contractors is mostly here rather than in the mowing. Ask us the same questions — we would rather be compared on them.
- Public liability insurance — can I see the certificate? The single most important one. Ask for the current certificate of currency rather than a verbal assurance, and check it is still in date. If a branch comes through a windscreen on your site, this is the document that matters. Ask for the certificate, every time
- Do you carry workers compensation? If somebody is injured on your property and the contractor has no cover, the exposure can land with the property owner. It is a fair question and any established operator will answer it without hesitating. Non-negotiable on any site
- Can you produce a SWMS for this site? A safe work method statement for the higher-risk parts of the job — work at height, chainsaw use, traffic near a frontage. A contractor who has never heard of one has not been doing commercial work. Standard on every commercial job
- Do your crews hold Working with Children Checks? Essential for schools, preschools and childcare centres, and often required even when work happens outside hours. Ask before the first visit, not on the day. Schools and childcare, always
- Who is qualified to apply chemicals? Herbicide and pesticide application on a commercial site has requirements around who may apply it, what is recorded and how the area is managed afterwards. It matters most where the public, residents or children use the space. Especially around occupied sites
- How do you handle work at height? Tall hedges and building-line trimming get done from scaffolding and proper equipment, or they get done off a ladder with somebody's fingers crossed. Ask which. We carry scaffolding for exactly this reason. Scaffolding, not a ladder and hope
- Can you work outside business hours? Retail frontages, offices, aged care and childcare frequently need the noisy work done early, late or on a weekend. A contractor with one crew usually cannot; one with several can. Ask before you need it
- What happens if my usual crew is unavailable? This is the question that separates a business from a sole trader. A site on a schedule needs the visit to happen whether or not one person is sick, and the answer should be a name, not a shrug. The reliability question

What is commercial gardening?
Commercial gardening is the maintenance of a property and its plants — grass, garden beds, hedges and trees — carried out by a gardener for profit, on a business site rather than a home. In practice it differs from residential work in three ways: the scale of equipment involved, the safety and insurance obligations that come with working where the public or staff are present, and the fact that presentation has to be consistent rather than seasonal.
Do you need to be trained to be a commercial gardener?
Yes, and more than people assume. It takes a real amount of knowledge and skill — not only operating commercial equipment safely, but understanding which plants work in which situations and conditions, and knowing the local area well enough to anticipate what the wildlife does and how that will affect the garden and its plants. On top of the horticulture there is the compliance side: safe work method statements, chemical handling, working at height and, for some sites, Working with Children Checks.
How much does commercial gardening cost in Sydney?
It varies far more than residential work, because sites vary far more. The honest answer is that it depends on difficulty, size and time, and that we quote after a free site visit. What we can tell you is how it gets priced: a fixed amount per visit on a regular schedule, an hourly rate with a crew where scope changes, or a quoted price for a one-off project. Sites on a schedule always work out cheaper per visit than the same site rescued a few times a year.
Is ride-on mowing cheaper than regular mowing?
On a large site, usually yes. A ride-on covers roughly six times the ground of a push mower in the same time, and a zero-turn more again, so the labour hours drop sharply even though the machine costs more to run. On anything over about half an acre it is normally both cheaper and a better finish. Below that, the setup and transport time cancels out the advantage.
Can you work outside business hours or on weekends?
Yes. Retail frontages, offices, aged care and childcare often need the noisy work done before opening, after closing or on a weekend, and we schedule around that. We are open seven days, 7am to 6:30pm as standard, and arrange earlier or later access where a site needs it.
Do you carry insurance and provide safety documentation?
Yes — public liability cover, workers compensation and safe work method statements for the higher-risk parts of a job. We are happy to provide current certificates before work starts, and we would encourage you to ask any contractor for the same rather than taking it on trust.
Do you handle site inductions?
Yes. Plenty of commercial and industrial sites require an induction before anyone works there, and our crews complete them as part of getting started. Same for sign-in procedures, escorted access and any site-specific PPE requirements.
How often should a commercial property be maintained?
Most sites sit on a fortnightly visit through the growth season from September to March and monthly over winter, which keeps presentation even across the year for a predictable annual cost. High-visibility frontages and sites with heavy tree litter often justify weekly attention in season. We set the frequency around the site rather than selling everyone the same schedule.
Do you take the green waste away?
Yes, on every visit. Prunings, clippings and litter leave with us. On commercial sites this matters more than people expect, because the volume that comes off a large property will not fit in the bins and a pile left behind the building becomes somebody's problem, and a fire risk.
Can you invoice the property manager or owners corporation?
Yes. We invoice whoever needs to receive it — property manager, owners corporation, facilities team or head office — with the site referenced clearly, and we can work to purchase orders where a business requires them.
Which parts of Sydney do you service?

Can you take over from our current contractor mid-contract?
Yes, and it is a common way we start. We do a free site visit, quote against what is actually there rather than what the last quote said, and where a site has drifted we usually suggest a one-off catch-up visit first so the ongoing schedule starts from a properly maintained baseline instead of chasing backlog for months.
