Find your salt zone

How close to the water are you?

On the beaches, your distance from the surf decides what thrives and what gets shredded. One street can be the difference between a frangipani flowering and a frangipani sulking.

Tap your spot — the picks change

Our picks for the front row

The headland survivors

If it grows on a headland, it'll grow at your place: banksia, westringia, coastal rosemary, lomandra and pigface take direct salt spray and keep their looks. Soft exotics burn here — plant the survivors and the garden stops being a casualty list.

  • Takes direct spray
  • Wind-shaped, not wind-shredded
  • Buffalo for the lawn

Salt-proof doesn't mean boring — it means native.

The science, drawn badly on purpose

The salt gradient

Salt spray fades fast as you move inland — which is why the same street grid holds wind-bent banksias at one end and rainforest ferns at the other. Beaches gardening is mostly about knowing where you sit on this line.

Salt exposure from the surf to the valley heavy salt fading… barely any the surf front row headland natives only few streets back frangipani & hedge territory leafy valley ferns, lilly pilly, the lot same postcode, three different gardens wind + spray shape the front row · shelter opens the options inland
Salt load drops off sharply with every street you move from the surf — so the beaches hold three gardens in one postcode: headland natives on the front row, classic coastal gardens a few streets back, and lush shade planting in the valleys. We plant for the zone you're actually in.

Local knowledge

Gardening the peninsula, properly

The Northern Beaches is a forty-minute drive that passes through half a dozen growing conditions. Sandy flats behind the lagoons, steep terraced blocks at Bilgola, rainforest gullies off Pittwater Road, and front rows that cop a southerly straight off the water. We work it every week, and the van carries what each of those gardens actually needs.

Sandy soil is a solvable problem

Beaches soil drains like a sieve and, once bone dry, actually repels water. The fix is routine, not rocket science: organic matter dug in, wetting agents a couple of times a year, mulch on every bed, and lawns fed little and often. Buffalo lawns love it here — there's a reason they're the beaches default.

Wind does its own pruning. Badly.

After every big blow, exposed gardens are full of salt-burnt tips and torn growth. Caught early, plants recover fast; left alone, burn opens the door to dieback. A seasonal once-over after the worst weather is one of the cheapest things a coastal garden can buy.

One street changes everything out here. Knowing which street you're on is the job.

  • Salt-tolerant planting matched to your exposure zone
  • Wetting agents & soil building for sandy blocks
  • Steep, terraced and stair-access gardens welcome
  • Holiday homes kept sharp between guests

Questions

Northern Beaches gardening FAQs

Which Northern Beaches suburbs do you service?

All of them — Manly, Fairlight and Balgowlah through Freshwater, Curl Curl, Dee Why, Collaroy and Narrabeen, up to Mona Vale, Newport, Bilgola, Avalon, Whale Beach and Palm Beach, plus the forest side: Terrey Hills, Belrose, Frenchs Forest and Davidson. If it's on the peninsula or backs onto it, we're there weekly.

What grows in a garden that cops salt wind?

Front-row gardens want plants that already live on headlands: banksia, westringia, coastal rosemary, lomandra and pigface shrug off spray that burns soft exotics. A few streets back the options open right up — frangipani, hibiscus and most hedges do well. Matching the plant to your distance from the water is the core skill of beaches gardening.

Why does my lawn dry out so fast on the beaches?

Sandy coastal soil drains fast and can turn water-repellent when it dries completely. The fix is organic matter dug in, a soil wetting agent a couple of times a year, and mulch on every bed. Buffalo handles the sand and salt better than most — it's the beaches lawn for a reason.

What does gardening cost on the Northern Beaches?

The same fair rates we run across Sydney: lawn mowing from $55, garden tidy-ups typically $160–$300, hedge-and-mow combos $220–$420, and bigger garden revivals quoted per job. Regular schedules come in under one-off visits, and every quote is free and in writing.

Can you look after a holiday home or rental?

Yes — a lot of our beaches work is keeping places sharp between owners, guests or tenants. We run scheduled visits, send photos after each one if you like, and keep the garden looking lived-in even when nobody's living in it.

When should hedges and frangipanis be pruned near the coast?

Hedges get shaped through the growing season with a final tidy in autumn; frangipanis are pruned in late winter while dormant, before spring growth. Coastal wind does some rough pruning of its own all year — part of our job is correcting its work.

Do you handle the steep blocks around Bilgola and Avalon?

Steep, terraced and stair-access blocks are a beaches specialty by necessity. We plan the job around the access, bring gear that carries well, and price it honestly in the quote rather than discovering the stairs on the day.

How often should a beaches garden be maintained?

Through the growing season (September to April), fortnightly keeps lawns and hedges ahead of the growth; monthly suits cooler months. Exposed gardens benefit from a seasonal check after big blows — salt burn and wind damage caught early recover much faster.
