I highly recommend Lachlan and the team at Sydney Gardeners. Not only do they do great work, but more importantly they are reliable! Lachlan was also more than happy to help me out when I needed an extra service squeezed in just before Xmas.
Lachlan and his team have been looking after my Strata Property for over 2 years now. He is diligent with his timekeeping, punctual, provides attention to detail and does not hesitate to go above and beyond to provide satisfaction to our strata residents and property management team.
Great communication and exceptional workmanship. The team arrived on time and did an amazing job with pruning, planting, and lawn care.

Been getting great service and value from Sydney gardeners now for a number of years, always great high quality work in my feature gardens. Attention to detail is second to none. No job to big for these boys to tackle.

Small space, big plans
Which Inner West garden is yours?
The Inner West does five kinds of garden, and each one wants different thinking. Tap yours and see what we'd do with it.
Tap your garden — the plan changes
The plan for a terrace courtyard
Shade garden, done proudly
Walled on three sides, sun for a couple of hours a day — that's not a problem, that's a fernery with a barbecue. Aspidistra, clivia, ferns and camellias in the ground, star jasmine up the walls, quality pots doing the heavy lifting, and lighting so it works at night, which is when courtyards actually get used.
- Shade-first planting
- Walls put to work
- Through-house access, protected
Small done well beats big done vaguely.
The clay clinic
What's the clay doing to your garden?
The Inner West sits on clay — brilliant soil once it's worked, misery when it isn't. Tap the symptom for the honest diagnosis.
Tap a symptom — get the diagnosis
Diagnosis: winter swamp
Compacted clay, nowhere to drain
Clay packs tight, water sits on top, and by August the lawn squelches. The fix is a program, not a miracle: core aeration, gypsum to open the clay, organic matter every season, and — where the block genuinely can't drain — raised beds or drainage lines. Clay soil is fertile gold once air gets into it.
- Aerate + gypsum
- Organic matter, repeat
- Drainage where needed
Worked clay grows the best gardens in Sydney.
The science, drawn badly on purpose
Anatomy of a terrace block
Long, narrow, walled — a terrace block is three microgardens in a row, and the sun only properly visits one of them at a time. Garden each part for what it actually gets, and the whole block works.

Local knowledge
The Inner West is small-garden country
Between the terraces of Newtown, the federation streets of Haberfield and the warehouse conversions of Marrickville, almost nothing out here is a quarter-acre block — and that's the charm. Small gardens punch above their weight when every square metre is chosen on purpose, and they go downhill fast when they're neglected, because there's nowhere for mess to hide.
Clay: the opposite problem to the coast
Beach suburbs fight sand that won't hold water; the Inner West fights clay that won't let it go. Winter waterlogging, summer cracking, compaction under foot traffic. The program that fixes it — aeration, gypsum, organic matter, drainage where needed — turns clay into the most fertile soil in Sydney. It just needs someone to actually run the program.
Through the house, like professionals
Half the terraces in the Inner West have no side access, and plenty of gardeners quietly don't want the job. We do it weekly: floors protected, waste bagged before it travels, tools carried not dragged, and the hallway left cleaner than we found it. The courtyard shouldn't miss out because of the floor plan.
A courtyard is not a small garden. It's a room with the roof off — and rooms deserve furnishing.
- Shade-first planting for walled courtyards
- Clay programs: aeration, gypsum, organic matter
- Heritage frontages kept period-appropriate
- Verge gardens within council guidelines
- Autumn leaf campaigns — planes, figs, jacarandas
- Through-house access with floor protection, always
What we do here
The full kit, Inner West edition
Lawn mowing
Small lawns kept sharp — and honest advice when a shaded patch would be happier as a garden bed.
Garden maintenance
Scheduled care for courtyards and frontages — pruning, feeding, weeding, and the clay program that makes it all work.
Hedge trimming
Murraya, lilly pilly and box — privacy and street appeal on streets where the frontage is the garden.
Mulching
Clay's best friend — organic mulch feeding the soil open, one courtyard-load at a time.
Tree work
Overhanging figs, jacaranda limbs and tight-access removals, handled with the neighbours in mind.
Tidy-ups & green waste
Pre-sale spruce-ups, end-of-lease resets and autumn leaf blitzes — bagged through the house, gone same day.

Questions
Inner West gardening FAQs
Which Inner West suburbs do you service?
All of them — Newtown, Enmore, Marrickville, Dulwich Hill, Summer Hill, Ashfield, Haberfield, Leichhardt, Annandale, Stanmore, Petersham, Lewisham, Balmain, Birchgrove, Rozelle, Lilyfield, Glebe, Camperdown, St Peters, Tempe, Croydon and Five Dock. If it's between the Anzac Bridge and the Cooks River, we're probably parked on your street already.
My terrace has no side access — can you still work on the back garden?
Yes — through-house access is standard Inner West work. We lay floor protection, carry rather than barrow where needed, bag green waste before it travels, and leave the hallway cleaner than we found it. It's slower than a side gate, and we price that honestly rather than discovering it on the day.
Why does my Inner West lawn get waterlogged every winter?
Most of the Inner West sits on clay. It holds water in winter — puddles, moss, compaction — and bakes brick-hard in summer. The fixes are aeration, gypsum to break the clay, organic matter over time, and sometimes raised beds or drainage where a lawn genuinely can't win. Opposite problem to Sydney's sandy coast, same result when ignored: sad grass.
What grows in a shady terrace courtyard?
South-facing courtyards between terrace walls are shade gardens — and good ones: ferns, aspidistra, clivia, philodendron, camellias and star jasmine on the walls all thrive. The trick is embracing the shade palette instead of watching sun-lovers sulk in it.
Do you look after heritage and federation gardens?
Yes — Haberfield and the conservation streets are some of our favourite work. Clipped hedges, roses, buffalo lawns and period-appropriate planting, maintained to suit the era of the house. We keep frontages neat enough for the heritage streetscape and honest enough to still be a garden.
Can you maintain a verge garden?
Yes — verge gardens are an Inner West institution and most councils in the area support them within their guidelines: keep sightlines, keep paths clear, no trip hazards. We plant and maintain verges that keep both the neighbours and the council happy.
What does gardening cost in the Inner West?
The same fair rates we run across Sydney: lawn mowing from $55, garden tidy-ups typically $160–$300, hedges and combined visits quoted per job. Small courtyard gardens are often our quickest visits — regular schedules come in under one-offs, and quotes are free.
The street trees bury my garden in leaves — can you help?
Autumn in the Inner West arrives by the trailer-load — planes, figs and jacarandas dump leaves for months. We clear beds, lawns and paths on a schedule, and the leaves leave with us as green waste. Better yet, some of it can become free mulch for your own beds.
