Find your microclimate

What's your spot like?

The CBD isn't one climate — it's a hundred. A south-facing canyon balcony and a west-facing rooftop two streets apart might as well be different countries. Pick your spot and we'll tell you what actually thrives there.

Tap a spot — the picks change

Our picks for a shaded canyon

The forest-floor crew

Ferns, aspidistra, philodendrons, peace lilies and camellias evolved under canopies — a tower's shadow reads as forest to them. Deep green, lush, and happier without harsh sun. We measure your actual hours of light before planting a thing.

  • 2–4 hrs light is plenty
  • Rich, moist soil
  • Glossy & lush all year

Shade isn't a problem. It's a plant list.

The science, drawn badly on purpose

Sun in the city is complicated

In the suburbs, north-facing means sunny. Between towers, the sun is a moving slot of light that visits some balconies for two hours and blasts others all afternoon. Getting CBD planting right starts with reading the canyon.

How light moves through a street canyon rooftop: sun most of the day — tough sun-lovers mid-floor balcony: a moving slot of light — the pot leans to follow it wind accelerates between towers — plant coastal-tough street level: all-day shade — forest-floor planting, not full-sun wishful thinking
A street canyon makes three gardens in one address: a full-sun rooftop, a part-sun balcony that gets a moving window of light, and an all-day-shade street level — with wind funnelling between the towers. We match plants to the microclimate they'll actually live in, not the one on the label.

A green oasis amidst urban hustle

City gardens fail for city reasons

Nothing about a CBD garden is hard because of the plants. It's hard because of the city: pots dry out with no groundwater beneath them, towers carve the sun into slots, wind funnels between buildings, soil arrives in bags instead of existing, and every job starts with a conversation about a loading dock. Solve those and the green part is easy.

Small spaces, measured thinking

On a six-square-metre balcony every pot has to earn its place. We design for the space you have — planter boxes sized to the balustrade, green walls where the floor is spoken for, species chosen for the light that actually arrives. Small done well beats big done vaguely.

Access is half the job

Most CBD garden quotes die on logistics: where does the ute park, which lift takes soil bags, what are the dock hours, who signs off the insurance? We handle building managers, book the dock, and time the visit around the building's rules. You get the garden; we do the paperwork.

A tower's shadow isn't a death sentence — it's a forest canopy with a postcode. Plant for it, and shade becomes the easiest garden you'll own.

  • Light measured before anything is planted
  • Wind-rated pots and planting on high floors
  • Drippers and smart timers within Sydney's water rules
  • Rooftop weight and drainage respected, always
  • Foliage washed — city dust off, gloss back on
  • Green waste out through the dock, gone with us

What we do

CBD gardening, done in the right order

1. Read the space

Light hours, wind, weight limits, taps and drainage — measured on site, because the label on the pot doesn't know your floor level.

2. Sort the access

Building manager looped in, dock and lift booked, insurance paperwork done. The boring half of city gardening — handled.

3. Design to the microclimate

Species picked for your actual light and wind, pots rated for the exposure, layout that earns every square metre.

4. Plant & plumb

Quality potting mix in, plants in, drippers and timers set up so the garden waters itself within the rules.

5. Leave it spotless

Soil swept, foliage washed, packaging and green waste out through the dock with us. The building never knows we were there.

6. Keep it thriving

Scheduled care visits — feed, prune, tidy, replace — so it looks like opening day all year, not just in the photos.

Pricing

CBD gardening prices, straight up

City work is priced by space, state and access — and in the CBD, access is real money, so we price it upfront instead of surprising you with it.

Regular care visits

From ~$120

Balconies, planters and foyers on a schedule — water, feed, prune, tidy, replace as needed.

One-off revives

$200–$500

Tired balconies and courtyards brought back — typical range, pinned exactly by the free site look.

Design, fitouts & rooftops

Fixed quote

New plantings, planter fitouts, green walls and rooftop gardens — designed and quoted per space.

The access line on your quote

Parking, dock bookings and lift time are the hidden cost of every CBD trade. Ours is a line item you can see, priced once — not an hourly meter running while someone argues with a concierge.

Rates for everything else we do live in the Sydney gardening price guide.

Questions

Sydney CBD gardening FAQs

What grows on a shaded CBD balcony?

More than you'd think. South-facing and canyon-shaded balconies suit ferns, aspidistra, philodendrons, peace lilies and camellias — plants that evolved under forest canopies and treat a tower's shadow the same way. The trick is matching the plant to the hours of light the spot actually gets, which we measure before we plant.

How windy is too windy for a balcony garden?

High-floor balconies cop wind that shreds soft foliage and tips light pots. We plant coastal natives that already live in wind — westringia, coastal rosemary, lomandra, banksia — in heavy, low-profile pots, and anchor or cluster them to break gusts. Done right, a windy balcony is a garden with a view, not a hazard.

Can my rooftop take a garden?

Weight is the first question, not plants. Saturated soil is heavy, so rooftop gardens are built with lightweight mixes, containers placed over structural points, and drainage that protects the membrane. We design within what the building can carry — and for anything substantial, alongside your building manager or engineer.

What do CBD gardening services cost?

Regular care visits for balconies and planters start around $120; one-off revives typically land between $200 and $500 depending on size and state; design work and rooftop fitouts are quoted fixed after a site look. CBD access — parking, docks, lifts — is priced into the quote upfront, never a surprise extra. Quotes are free.

How do you handle building access?

It's our problem, not yours. We coordinate with building managers and concierges, book loading docks and lifts, carry our own insurance paperwork, and time visits around building rules. Most CBD gardening quotes fail on logistics, not plants — logistics is half of what you're hiring.

Do watering restrictions apply to balcony gardens?

Sydney's water rules apply everywhere, and city gardens dry out faster than suburban ones — pots have no groundwater to draw on. We set up drippers and smart timers that water within the rules, mulch every container, and pick plants whose thirst matches how often anyone will realistically water them.

Does city pollution hurt plants?

Dust and exhaust film block light on leaf surfaces more than they poison plants. Tough, glossy-leafed species shrug it off best, and part of CBD maintenance is simply washing foliage and refreshing the top layer of soil. Healthy city plants are absolutely achievable — they just need city-specific care.

Do you look after office and cafe plants?

Yes — foyers, offices, cafes and retail spaces on a regular schedule: watering, feeding, pruning, cleaning and replacing anything past its best. Green spaces are proven to lift how a space feels to customers and staff; a maintenance schedule keeps yours from becoming the sad ficus in the corner.
