My first time using Lachlan from Sydney Gardeners. I had overgrown high hedges to be significantly cut back and I was impressed with the finished job. I will be using them again and recommend him for all your gardening needs.

Lachlan and his men have been doing my garden for some years. My hedges and trees are beautifully trimmed every time. I share the same experience with the majority, those with excellent reviews.

How it works

Four steps, no surprises

Assess

An arborist looks at the tree — health, structure, access, and whether council rules apply. The visit is free.

Fixed quote

You get a written price before anything is cut. No hourly meters running, no hidden extras.

Lop safely

Advanced rigging and controlled lowering around roofs, fences and power lines. Insured on site.

Clean up & recycle

Branches and debris gone before we leave. Green waste is separated and recycled, not landfilled.

Why lop

What tree lopping does for your property

Sydney's figs, eucalypts and palms give us shade, cleaner air and street appeal — but near homes, structures and power lines they need managing to stay an asset.

Health

A healthier tree

Removing diseased, damaged or dead branches stops infection spreading and directs energy into strong growth.

Safety

Storm-safe limbs

Overgrown or dead limbs are what comes down in a southerly buster — onto roofs, cars and power lines. Lopping removes the hazard.

Looks

Shape and street appeal

A well-shaped tree lifts the whole property. We prune to a form that suits the tree and the landscape around it.

Light

Sun and airflow

Opening the canopy lets light and air through — better for the tree, and for the lawn and garden growing beneath it.

Know what to ask for

Lopping, pruning or removal — what does your tree need?

The words get used interchangeably, but they're different jobs — and knowing which one you need is the difference between a healthy tree and an expensive mistake.

Tree pruning

Selective, surgical cuts — removing specific branches to improve the tree's health, structure or clearance. The gentlest option, and the right call for most healthy trees that just need managing.

Tree lopping

Heavier reduction of the canopy or height, used when a tree has outgrown its position or poses a risk. Done well, by arborists who understand how the species regrows, it keeps the tree safe and viable. Done badly, it stresses the tree — which is why lopping is arborist work, not chainsaw work.

Tree removal

When a tree is dead, dangerous or in the wrong place entirely, we remove it in controlled sections and can finish with stump grinding so it doesn't grow back.

Lopping isn't just cutting — it's deciding what the tree should look like in five years, then cutting.

Whatever the job, every crew arrives insured, works to industry-best safety practice, and treats the surrounding garden — lawns, beds, hedges — as carefully as the tree itself.

  • Certified arborists on every tree job
  • Advanced rigging for tight spaces and tall trees
  • Comprehensive aftercare advice once the work is done
  • Residential, strata and commercial properties

What it costs

Tree lopping cost in Sydney

Every tree is different — access, waste volume and how close it stands to structures all move the price. These are honest guide ranges for Sydney in 2026; your job gets a fixed written quote before anything is cut.

Small trees

$300 – $700

Light canopy work, easy access, smaller waste volume.

Medium trees

$700 – $2,000

More climbing, heavier canopy work and controlled lowering.

Large trees

$2,000 – $5,000+

Major reductions — height, spread and proximity to structures drive the price.

Do you need council approval?

Often, yes. Most Sydney councils protect significant trees and require a permit before major pruning or removal — and the rules differ between councils. We'll flag whether your job is likely to need approval and point you to your council's process before any work starts, so you're never caught out.

Questions

Tree lopping questions, answered

How much does tree lopping cost in Sydney?
As a guide: around $300–$700 for a small tree, $700–$2,000 for a medium tree, and $2,000–$5,000+ for major work on large trees. Access, waste volume and proximity to structures all affect the price — which is why every job gets a fixed written quote before work starts. The quote visit is free.
Do I need council approval to lop or remove a tree?
Often, yes. Most Sydney councils protect significant trees and require a permit before major pruning or removal, and the rules differ from council to council. We'll flag whether your job is likely to need approval and point you to your council's process before any work starts.
How often should I consider tree lopping for my property?
It depends on the type, age and health of the tree, and how close it sits to structures and power lines. Large trees near homes generally benefit from an inspection — and potential lopping — every 2–5 years.
How do I know if my tree needs lopping?
Watch for branches interfering with power lines, disease or rot in large limbs, branches hanging dangerously over structures, or an overgrown tree blocking light or views. If in doubt, get it assessed — it's free.
Is tree lopping safe for the tree?
Done correctly and responsibly, yes. It's a significant intervention though, and can stress a tree if done poorly — which is why it's arborist work, not chainsaw work. Our team lops to minimise harm and protect the tree's long-term health.
What happens to the branches afterwards?
Every job includes a full clean-up. Branches and debris are removed from your property, and the green waste is separated and recycled rather than sent to landfill.
