Why mulch
The unpaid worker in your garden
A mulched bed is doing four jobs around the clock. It holds moisture in the soil where roots can use it instead of losing it to the sky. It keeps soil temperature steady — cooler through a January heatwave, warmer through a July morning — which is the difference between roots that keep growing and roots that shut down. It starves weed seeds of the light they need to germinate. And if it's an organic mulch, it's slowly composting in place, feeding worms and soil microbes that turn it into free fertiliser.
Moisture, the big one
Bare Sydney soil in summer loses water almost as fast as you can put it on. A proper 75 mm layer can cut evaporation from the surface by up to 70%, which is why mulching sits near the top of Sydney Water's recommendations every time restrictions come around. Beds stay damp for days longer between waterings — and the water bill notices.
The depth actually matters
Under 50 mm, mulch is decoration — light gets through and weeds sail up. Past 100 mm, water and air struggle to reach the soil and shallow roots suffocate. We spread to a measured 75 mm as standard, pull mulch back from stems and trunks so nothing rots, and keep it clear of weep holes on the house.

Mulching, done in the right order
Most bad mulch jobs aren't bad mulch — they're good mulch dumped on unprepared beds. The prep is half the job.
1. Look & measure
We walk the garden, measure the beds, check what's under the old mulch and quote the whole job in writing — free.
2. Match the mulch
Hardwood, pine bark, composted blend, sugar cane or native leaf litter — matched to the plants, the look and the budget.
3. Prep the beds
Weeds out by hand, tired mulch stripped if it's had it, soil surface loosened, edges cut clean so the mulch stays where it's put.
4. Spread to depth
Bulk mulch in, spread to a measured 75 mm, feathered back from every stem and trunk, clear of weep holes and paths.
5. Finish clean
Paths blown, spill swept, green waste gone with us. The only evidence is the beds looking brand new.

Garden mulching FAQs
How deep should mulch be?
For most Sydney gardens, 75 mm is the sweet spot — deep enough to block light to weed seeds and slow evaporation, shallow enough that water and air still reach the soil. We use 50 mm for top-ups over existing mulch and up to 100 mm where weeds are the main battle. Piling much deeper than that suffocates roots and wastes money.
How much mulch do I need?
Multiply bed area by depth: one cubic metre covers roughly 13 m² at 75 mm. A typical Sydney garden with 60–100 m² of beds needs 4.5–7.5 m³ — that's 180–300 bags' worth, which is why we bring it in bulk. The calculator at the top of this page does the maths for you.
What does garden mulching cost in Sydney?
Bulk mulch runs roughly $80–$160 per cubic metre delivered depending on type, and spreading is priced by volume and access. Small bed top-ups start around $180; a typical suburban garden lands between $600 and $1,200 supplied and spread. Every job is confirmed in writing before we start, and the quote is free.
Which mulch is best for my garden?
It depends what the garden needs. Chunky hardwood chip lasts longest and is the best all-rounder; pine bark holds its colour for display beds; composted blends feed tired soil as they break down; sugar cane and lucerne suit veggie beds; native gardens do best under a eucalyptus leaf-litter blend that mimics the bush floor. When is the best time to mulch in Sydney?
Spring — September and October — before the heat arrives, so the moisture layer is working all summer. An autumn top-up around April or May insulates roots for winter and keeps beds sharp. If the garden needs mulch now, though, any time beats not mulching.
Do you remove the old mulch first?
Only when it needs it. Sound existing mulch gets topped up to depth; matted, mouldy or termite-prone layers are stripped and taken away with the green waste before fresh mulch goes down. We'll tell you which your beds need when we quote.
