Lawn mowing
Northern Beaches

Beaches lawns are buffalo country on sandy soil — mown right, they're the thickest, toughest lawns in Sydney. Mown wrong, they're weeds with a view. We do the mowing right, every fortnight, so yours stays the good kind.

The lawn doctor

What's your lawn doing?

Most "dead" beaches lawns aren't dead — they're doing something very fixable. Tap the symptom and get the honest diagnosis.

Tap a symptom — get the diagnosis

Diagnosis: dry patches

Hydrophobic sandy soil

The beaches classic. Sandy soil that dries right out starts repelling water — rain and sprinklers bead and run off, so the patch stays dead no matter how much you water. The fix: soil wetting agent a couple of times a year, organic matter over time, and mulch-thinking for the lawn — never scalp it bare.

  • Wetting agent 2×/yr
  • Water deep, not often
  • Recovers in weeks

Very fixable — it's chemistry, not a dead lawn.

Know your grass

Which lawn have you actually got?

Buffalo, kikuyu and couch all want different treatment — and half the beaches mows them all the same. Two-second ID: check the leaf, then check the card.

Tap your grass — heights & care change

That's buffalo — the beaches default

Buffalo (Sir Walter & co.)

Broad soft leaf, spongy thatch, best shade tolerance of the warm-season grasses — the beaches lawn for a reason. Mow at 40–50 mm in summer and shade, ~30 mm in winter. Never scalp it: the leaf is its engine and its sunscreen, and scalped buffalo is an open invitation to weeds.

  • Summer: 40–50 mm
  • Winter: ~30 mm
  • Fortnightly in season

Treat the leaf kindly and buffalo does the rest.

The setting that matters

One deck height doesn't fit all

The single biggest difference between a thick lawn and a weedy one is the number on the mower's height lever. We change it per lawn, per season — here's the cheat sheet.

Mowing heights by grass type summer? go higher Couch 15–30 mm fine leaf, loves low & tight Kikuyu 25–40 mm fast grower, mow often Buffalo 30–50 mm the beaches default — keep the leaf golden rule: never take more than a third of the leaf in one mow — and everything mows higher in shade
Couch runs low and tight at 15–30 mm, kikuyu sits at 25–40 mm, and buffalo — most beaches lawns — wants 30–50 mm, at the top of that range through summer and in shade. Our decks change height per lawn and per season; that one lever is half of lawn care.

Beaches lawn care

Mowing is the easy bit. Mowing right is the job.

Anyone can make grass shorter. Keeping a beaches lawn thick on sandy soil with salt in the air is a system: the right height for the grass and the season, a schedule that never takes more than a third of the leaf, edges cut clean instead of chewed, and clippings gone so thatch doesn't build. That's the difference you can see from the street.

Sand is the real opponent

Beaches lawns sit on soil that drains instantly and holds almost nothing. They want feeding little and often, wetting agents before summer, and the mowing height left generous through heatwaves so the soil stays shaded. Lawns we mow get that thinking included — it's why they stay green when the neighbour's crisps up in January.

Steep blocks, no drama

Half the peninsula is on a hill. Terraced lawns, stair access, ocean-side slopes — we mow them every week with gear that carries, and the access is priced honestly in the quote instead of discovered on the day.

The height lever on a mower does more for a buffalo lawn than any bag of fertiliser. We treat it that way.

  • Height set per grass, per season — never scalped
  • Edges knifed along every path and bed
  • Clippings caught and gone — thatch kept down
  • Wetting agent & feeding programs for sandy soil
  • Same-day mowing if you call before 9am

Questions

Beaches lawn mowing FAQs

How short should buffalo grass be mown?

Buffalo does best at 40–50 mm in summer and shady spots, down to around 30 mm through the cooler months. Scalping buffalo short is the fastest way to invite weeds and burn it in a heatwave — the extra leaf is its engine and its sunscreen. Most beaches lawns are buffalo, and most of the sad ones have simply been mown like couch.

How often should a Northern Beaches lawn be mown?

Fortnightly through the growing season (September to April) keeps buffalo and kikuyu ahead of the growth without stressing the lawn; every 3–6 weeks over winter. The golden rule is never removing more than a third of the leaf in one cut — regular schedules exist so that rule stays easy to keep.

Why does my lawn have dry patches that won't re-wet?

Classic beaches problem: sandy soil turns hydrophobic when it dries out completely, so water beads and runs off instead of soaking in. The fix is a soil wetting agent a couple of times a year plus organic matter worked in over time — after that, watering and rain actually reach the roots again.

Do you take the clippings away?

Yes — catching and removing clippings keeps thatch down and the lawn looking clean, and everything we take leaves as recycled green waste. On big healthy lawns we can mulch-mow instead, returning fine clippings to feed the soil — we'll recommend what suits your lawn.

What does lawn mowing cost on the Northern Beaches?

Small lawns under 30 m² from $55, medium lawns under 70 m² from $75, and large lawns under 120 m² from $110 — the same rates we run across Sydney, with regular schedules coming in under one-off cuts. Bigger than that, see our ride-on and acreage mowing. Quotes are free.

Can you mow steep or terraced blocks?

Yes — steep, terraced and stair-access lawns around Bilgola, Avalon, Newport and the ocean-side streets are standard work for us. We bring gear that carries well and price the access honestly in the quote.

My buffalo lawn is thin under trees — can it be fixed?

Usually. Buffalo is the most shade-tolerant of the warm-season grasses, but it still needs a few hours of light. We mow shaded areas higher, thin overhanging canopy where that's an option, and feed lightly and often. Where a spot is genuinely too dark, honest advice: garden bed, not lawn.

Is kikuyu taking over my buffalo a problem?

It will be — kikuyu outruns buffalo in full sun and its runners weave through until the lawn is patchwork. It can be managed with selective control and mowing strategy, but the earlier it's caught, the easier. If you can see invading runners now, that's the right week to call.
